Dan Erlewine is well known in the Luthiery world as a guitar repairman, builder, and teacher of the trade. His books—including Guitar Player’s Repair Guide, How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great, Guitar Finishing Step by Step, Fret Work Step by Step, and Trade Secrets—are definitive reference works that have stood the test of time. His classic columns for Guitar Player and Bass Player magazines, for Vintage Guitar Magazine (where he is still current after 18years), and his video, and dvd courses have helped introduce the vocabulary of guitar repair and setup to the masses. His 35 year tenure as the face of StewMac helped guide the company into being the leader in guitar making and repair tools, instructional videos, books, hardware, guitar and amp building kits world-wide.
As a guitar maker, Dan’s instruments have found their way into the hands of icons such as Jerry Garcia, Albert King, Otis Rush, Joe Bonamassa, and Jason Sinay.

Chayton Alo, founder of The Luthier Bench, conducts a 132-minute sweeping interview of a legend in the lutherie industry – Dan Erlewine. Recorded just a few months before Dan’s 80th birthday in summer 2024, this podcast is an incredible journey into the life of a man who has defined lutherie education for over half a century. Walk with Dan from his childhood years and learning from his woodworking father through his first record player, first guitar bought, first repair job, and first experience creating video content for luthiers. Did you know that Dan’s band opened up for The Cream at The Filmore and The Grateful Dead. And, if that isn’t enough, Dan has built a series of historic guitars first for Albert King and then for Jerry Garcia. The story of Dan’s life is the story of music history, it is the story of lutherie education, and it is the story of love for music and for guitars.
