History of the Lucy Flying V
An historic guitar build listing by Earth’s most famous guitar educator and repairman – Dan Erlewine. In 1971, Dan built a Flying V electric for blues legend Albert King from a century-old block of black walnut. Dan custom-built and designed this instrument for Albert King who played it throughout his career. In the last 50 years, approximately 15 replicas have been built by the Erlewine workshop and each is a masterpiece build and a once-in-a-lifetime Collector’s opportunity. This build is also from a block of solid black walnut and comes with a double-humbucker pick-up configuration, and all-gold accents.
Lucy By The Numbers
Dan Erlewine approached blues legend Albert King in 1971 with an offer to build a ‘one-off’ guitar out of a century-old block of black walnut. From 1971 to 2001, the original Lucy was the single build of this guitar. In the last 25 years, there have been approximately 18 Lucy Replicas that have been fabricated by the Erlewine workshop.

This guitar model contains every element of value from a Collector’s standpoint: (1) there is history embedded in this guitar from one of the greatest blues players of all time Albert King; (2) the builder of this guitar is the most pedigreed guitar man in the last 50 years; and (3) the construction quality of the replicas is even better than the original.
